Summary

"The Works of Louis Becke: A Linked Index to the Project Gutenberg Editions by Louis Becke" is a collection of exciting stories based in the South Seas, full of adventures on the ocean. Written a long time ago, these stories paint a picture of what life was like on ships, meeting different people, and the complicated world of colonial times. Becke's stories are mostly about brave adventures, how tough people can be, and the strange secrets of the Pacific Islands. You'll read about sailors, traders, and people who live in places like "Yorke The Adventurer" and "John Corwell, Sailor." With every story, you learn about what it was like to live by the sea back then, as well as the personal stories of Becke's characters, from fishing trips to surprising meetings with nature and island people. Becke's characters show us the hard parts of living in colonial times and the fun, but unsure, life at sea, all told with a feeling of looking back fondly and respecting the cultures he writes about.

About the Author

George Lewis Becke was at the turn of the nineteenth century, the most prolific, significant, and internationally renowned Australian-born writer of the South Pacific region. Having lived and worked among Pacific Islands and Islanders as a trader, ship's supercargo, and villager for some two decades, learning languages and observing natural and cultural life, Becke was prompted by J F Archibald of The Bulletin to write down his experiences, eventually becoming a popular and respected author of short stories, novellas, novels, as well as historic and ethnographic works.
