"The Untempered Wind" by Joanna E. Wood is a story set in a late 1800s countryside village and it shows the tough life Myron Holder has as she deals with shame and sadness because she’s a mom but not married. The story kicks off by showing Myron trying to go about her life, doing her chores, and dealing with all the mean talk in the village of Jamestown, which is usually a happy place as springtime comes. Even though the village is buzzing with activity, Myron feelssuper alone and down because everyone looks down on her. The beginning of the book gives us a good look at what kind of person she is and how heavy the shame is on her, hinting at the big problems she will have to face with her grandma being disgusted with her and everyone in town gossiping about her.
