Summary

"Tess of the Storm Country" by Grace Miller White is a story about Tessibel Skinner, a young woman who grows up in a poor fishing community near Ithaca, New York, facing tough prejudice and legal troubles in the early 1900s. The story shows how hard Tess's life is due to poverty and her low social position. As the story starts, we see how the fishermen around her treat her badly, calling her names and showing how society judges people based on class and gender. The complex family relationships, especially with her father, create the main problems she faces. As rumors spread about her father's legal issues, Tess struggles between standing by him and dealing with the social judgment that threatens their way of life demonstrating Tess's strong spirit.

About the Author

Grace Miller White (1868–1957) was an American writer. She began her writing career novelizing plays, before turning her hand to novels in 1909. Several of her books were adapted for the big screen, most notably Tess of the Storm Country, which was filmed on four occasions between 1914 and 1960. She adopted the name Grace around 1897, in memory of a younger sister who had died before reaching her first birthday.
