Summary

"A Winter Amid the Ice, and Other Thrilling Stories" by Jules Verne is a compilation of late 19th-century adventure tales, with the initial story, "Doctor Ox's Experiment," spotlighting the sleepy town of Quiquendone and its apathetic citizens. Life in this ordinary place takes a sharp turn with the arrival of Doctor Ox, a peculiar scientist whose lighting project, powered by oxyhydric gas, promises to revolutionize the town's illumination. Unbeknownst to the residents, this experiment triggers a wave of frenzied excitement, transforming their calm disposition into passionate volatility. Conflicts erupt, and the town is thrown into turmoil, exploring themes of change and the surprising outcomes of disrupting a predictable society.

About the Author

Jules Gabriel Verne was a French novelist, poet, and playwright. His collaboration with the publisher Pierre-Jules Hetzel led to the creation of the Voyages extraordinaires, a series of bestselling adventure novels including Journey to the Center of the Earth (1864), Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Seas (1870), and Around the World in Eighty Days (1872). His novels, always well-researched according to the scientific knowledge then available, are generally set in the second half of the 19th century, taking into account the technological advances of the time.
