Summary

"Culture and Anarchy" by Matthew Arnold is a piece of social commentary from the 1800s that looks into the idea of "culture" as a way to fix society's problems and make people better, arguing that being good and smart are key to a civilized world. Arnold critiques what's happening in society, pushing for people to grow in a balanced way, using both their heads and their hearts. Starting with a worry that people aren't valuing the wisdom of the past enough, he shows how culture is more than just knowing things; it's about becoming better people morally and helping others. Arnold wants people to shift from focusing on themselves and what society tells them to value, to instead developing humanity in a more complete and peaceful way, showing how growing as a person and growing as a society go hand in hand.

About the Author

Matthew Arnold was an English poet and cultural critic. He was the son of Thomas Arnold, the headmaster of Rugby School, and brother to both Tom Arnold, literary professor, and William Delafield Arnold, novelist and colonial administrator. He has been characterised as a sage writer, a type of writer who chastises and instructs the reader on contemporary social issues. He was also an inspector of schools for thirty-five years, and supported the concept of state-regulated secondary education.
