Summary

"A Stable for Nightmares; or, Weird Tales" by Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu presents a collection of late 19th-century ghost stories that explore supernatural themes through eerie tales and unsettling events. The book begins with a traveler journeying to the deserted Barwyke Hall in Lancashire to resolve a property issue for wealthy heirs, where the foreboding landscape and local legends of a long-deceased owner and a mysterious "Dickon the Devil" create a tense atmosphere. Each narrative reveals a different aspect of the uncanny, from haunted places to ghostly encounters, designed to invoke dread and capture the reader's imagination.
