Summary

"Poor Jack" by Frederick Marryat is a 19th-century story set along London's River Thames that revolves around Jack Saunders and examines the society around him, his family, and his own hard times. The book begins by describing Jack's family history, most notably his father, who was a captain's assistant, but spends significant time on Jack's mother, Araminta, who is proud and confrontational because she used to be a ladies' maid. The story pulls readers into Jack's changing life, paving the way for his adventures and individual growth as he deals with difficult situations.

About the Author

Captain Frederick Marryat was a Royal Navy officer and a novelist. He is noted today as an early pioneer of nautical fiction, particularly for his semi-autobiographical novel Mr Midshipman Easy (1836). He is remembered also for his children's novel The Children of the New Forest (1847). In addition, he developed a widely used system of maritime flag signalling, known as Marryat's Code.
