Summary

"Poor Jack" by Frederick Marryat is a tale set in a world of seafaring adventures. A family's story unfolds, starting with the father's narration of his early life as a sailor and his complex relationship with Araminta, a woman of simple origins with greater social ambitions. Their bond is tested by both humor and heartbreak, as the mother struggles with social aspirations beyond their reach, creating a family conflict that also impacts those around them. At the heart of it is young Jack, struggling through the turbulence of his home life and showing determination to overcome the difficulties and build a more promising future.

About the Author

Captain Frederick Marryat was a Royal Navy officer and a novelist. He is noted today as an early pioneer of nautical fiction, particularly for his semi-autobiographical novel Mr Midshipman Easy (1836). He is remembered also for his children's novel The Children of the New Forest (1847). In addition, he developed a widely used system of maritime flag signalling, known as Marryat's Code.
