Summary

"The Travels and Adventures of Monsieur Violet in California, Sonora, and Western Texas" by Captain Marryat is a 19th-century adventure story about Monsieur Violet, whose journey starts after fleeing France with his father following a revolution. The story dives into their quest for a fresh start in the Americas, their exploration of different cultures, particularly the Shoshones, and the difficulties of settling into a new land while trying to bring farming and civilization to native peoples. Violet's earlier years shape his life as he thinks back on his previous journeys and the important events that led him to the New World. His father, a supporter of the French monarchy, greatly influences his upbringing, with early travels all over Europe and then to America. Prince Seravalle, who wants to go back to California to help the Shoshone tribe, is also introduced, and he joins Monsieur Violet as they work to teach the natives how to farm. As the story moves on from its beginnings of travel and discovery, central themes emerge that include the difficult interactions between settlers and Native Americans, the battles with making changes, and the irresistible pull of adventure.

About the Author

He is remembered also for his children's novel The Children of the New Forest (1847). In addition, he developed a widely used system of maritime flag signalling, known as Marryat's Code.
