Summary

"Valerie" by Captain Marryat is a story set in 19th-century France about a young woman navigating the difficult expectations of her family and society. Instead of sea adventures like the author’s other stories, this one follows Valerie, who has to live with a mean mother and a difficult home. The book explores Valerie’s strength, her efforts to figure out who she is, and her search for freedom. At the start, Valerie tells about her early life and her family problems. Her mother is not happy to have a daughter and treats Valerie badly. Even though Valerie finds some happiness living with her grandmother, she eventually has to return to her mother's control, which makes her life even harder, showcasing her ability to withstand tough times as she grows and faces challenges.

About the Author

Captain Frederick Marryat was a Royal Navy officer and a novelist. He is noted today as an early pioneer of nautical fiction, particularly for his semi-autobiographical novel Mr Midshipman Easy (1836). He is remembered also for his children's novel The Children of the New Forest (1847). In addition, he developed a widely used system of maritime flag signalling, known as Marryat's Code.
