"Beauty Interrupted" by Charles L. Fontenay is a science fiction story that explores the clash between planets. Set on Orcti, the tale centers around the Orctians, who are filled with jealousy towards the advanced Earthmen living amongst them. The story examines ideas of advancement, outward beauty, and the harmful effects of intense desire, especially when knowledge and control cause both understanding and destruction. We follow Birkala, a young Orctian scientist who is unhappy with Erik, an Earthman accepted into Orcti society and praised for his abilities. Spurred by jealousy, Birkala attempts to discover the secrets that Erik possesses, specifically a prohibited beam transmitter. After Birkala's actions unknowingly cause his sister Spira to be taken to a place of unimaginable danger, both he and Erik are forced to face the limits of their knowledge, pointing out the dangers of uncontrolled desire and the need for emotional and moral growth to go along with scientific progress.
