Summary

"There Is Sorrow on the Sea" by Gilbert Parker is a story set in 18th-century England where love, who you are, and being double-crossed are big ideas, all mixed into a story of smuggling with problems in a family. It follows Cousin Dick, who is in love with Fanny, as they get caught up in problems with Lancy Doane, an officer who stops smugglers. As Dick’s brother, Tom Doane, causes problems by smuggling, everyone has to make tough choices that test what they believe in. Dick helps Tom, which makes things get crazy with betrayals and fights with people chasing them. In the end, the story looks at what happens because of the choices they make, how love lasts even when things are hard, and how people can change for the better, leading to a touching ending for everyone.
