Summary

"The Girl of the Golden Gate" by William Brown Meloney is a captivating story set in the early 1900s, mostly about a ship captain named Paul Whitridge, with a secretive past and a boatload of emotional baggage. We meet Whitridge in Yokohama, trying to get on the ship Cambodia. It’s clear he's been through tough times, like surviving a mutiny and a crazy storm. The story gets interesting when he meets Emily Granville, who is beautiful and in trouble, and also trying to get on the same ship. Whitridge gives up his room for her. This shows how he's ready to sacrifice for others, to maybe fix something about his past. The book looks at the themes of sacrifice and trying to find who you are in a world that can be pretty dangerous and rough.
