Summary

"The Wages of Virtue" by Percival Christopher Wren is a story set in the early 1900s that follows characters, including Sir Montague Merline, through their experiences in the French Foreign Legion. The narrative throws the reader into a world of military life, where ideas of duty, love, and who the characters truly are get tested against the harsh realities of war. Early in the book, Lord Huntingten's growing fondness for Lady Merline creates a complex emotional web of loyalty and desire. As the friends enjoy an African safari, the peace is threatened by news of unrest, which hints at upcoming conflicts and moral questions. The characters must grapple with difficult choices about staying true to what is right, all while navigating the challenges of love and obligation.
