Summary

"Eline Vere" by Louis Couperus is a novel set in the late 19th century that examines the constraints placed upon women in society through the story of Eline, a thoughtful young woman searching for meaning in a world that often feels restricting. The book portrays Eline's experiences—her relationships and aspirations—within a society that values appearances over authenticity. The novel starts with a lively social event, where characters get ready for a performance, filled with anticipation. This opening scene introduces the character, Eline and sets the stage to understand her introspective nature, her sense of isolation, and her quest to define her place in the world. The narrative switches between moments of tenderness and observations about the shallow aspects of social life, preparing readers for Eline's emotional exploration.
