"Ecstasy: A Study of Happiness" by Louis Couperus is a story set in the late 1800s that looks at big ideas like love and finding happiness amid hard times and what society expects from people. It starts with Dolf visiting Cecile, who is his sister-in-law , in her private room. They talk and we learn about them. Dolf seems like a nice guy who cares, and Cecile is still sad about her husband who passed, and comes across as breakable and thoughtful. As the story beings many feelings simmer beneath the surface, hinting at something deeper that could happen between them.
