"Ecstasy: A Study of Happiness" by Louis Couperus is a story set in the late 1800s that looks at big ideas like love and finding happiness amid hard times and what society expects from people. Dolf seems like a nice guy who cares, and Cecile is still sad about her husband who passed, and comes across as breakable and thoughtful.
