Summary

"The Twilight of the Souls" by Louis Couperus is the third book in a series that examines the complex relationships within a family as they face tough emotional and psychological challenges. The story focuses on Gerrit, a husband and father, who is burdened by his duties and worried about life, death, and the well-being of his loved ones. Early in the book, Gerrit wakes up feeling unwell after a night out, already hinting at the bigger troubles he faces, both physically and mentally. While he shows love and affection towards his children, he secretly fears death and the future of his family. When his sister-in-law Dorine rushes in with alarming news about Gerrit's brother, Ernst, who seems to be losing his mind, Gerrit is thrown into a mix of confusion and worry. These first scenes of the book create a detailed picture of a family dealing with life's ups and downs, highlighting Gerrit's inner battles and growing fear about his brother's mental state, suggesting themes of mental health and the powerful grip of family connections.
