Summary

"The Lady from the Sea" by Henrik Ibsen is a thought-provoking play from the late 1800s that looks at love, who we are, and how our past can hold us back, told through the story of Ellida Wangel, who is stuck between her husband and a strange man from her past who might come back. The story happens in a small town by a fjord in Norway, where the main themes are wanting something more and fighting for your own freedom. At the beginning, we see Doctor Wangel's home, with its lively garden and everyone waiting for Mr. Arnholm to arrive. The story moves smoothly between talks between the family, especially focusing on Ellida's special bond with the sea and how people in town see her as the "Lady from the Sea." Her relationship with Wangel is shown as difficult because she is struggling with her past. The start sets the stage for a deep look into Ellida’s inner struggle, what her family expects of her, and the strong influence of the sea, creating a tense and emotional mood.

About the Author

Henrik Johan Ibsen was a Norwegian playwright and theatre director. His major works include Brand, Peer Gynt, Emperor and Galilean, A Doll's House, Ghosts, An Enemy of the People, The Wild Duck, Rosmersholm, Hedda Gabler, The Master Builder, and When We Dead Awaken.
