Summary

"The Second Deluge" by Garrett Putman Serviss is a science fiction story about a scientist named Cosmo Versál. He finds out that Earth will crash into a nebula, causing a huge flood. Cosmo tries to warn everyone, even putting up posters in New York, but most people don't believe him. He then builds an ark, like Noah, to save some people from the flood. The story looks at what people believe, how they think, and the hard choices Cosmo has to make about who gets to live or die. He feels the heavy responsibility of deciding the future of humanity.

About the Author

Garrett Putnam Serviss was an American astronomer, popularizer of astronomy, and early science fiction writer. Serviss was born in Sharon Springs, New York and majored in science at Cornell University. He took a law degree at Columbia University but never worked as an attorney. Instead, in 1876 he joined the staff of The New York Sun newspaper, working as a journalist until 1892 under editor Charles Dana.
