"The Sons of Japheth" by Richard Wilson is a science fiction story from the mid-20th century that zooms in on a future pilot's mission to wipe out humankind and save the animals. After Earth is wrecked in World War V, Pilot Officer Roy Vanjan gets a huge task from Dr. Garfield Gar: go back in time to the Flood and take out Noah and his family. Vanjan does what he's told, hoping for a new timeline where animals thrive. But his adventure goes sideways, changing him in ways he never expected and showing him that life finds a way, no matter what, teaching him that even with time travel, choices can backfire big time.
