Summary

"The Comedienne" by Władysław Stanisław Reymont is about a young woman named Janina, stuck in her small-town life as the station-master's daughter, desiring to break free and chase her dreams of becoming a theater actress. The story kicks off in Bukowiec, where we meet Janina, see her dealing with an unwanted admirer named Grzesikiewicz, and coping with her strict father, Mr. Orlowski. She's desperate to get away from her controlling home and refuses to be forced into a marriage she doesn't want, showing her strong will to define her own path. As things heat up with her father, she decides to leave for the theater, stepping into a difficult and confusing world where she has to figure out who she is and what she wants.

About the Author

Władysław Stanisław Reymont was a Polish novelist and the laureate of the 1924 Nobel Prize in Literature. His best-known work is the award-winning four-volume novel Chłopi.
