Summary

"Pan" by Knut Hamsun, is a story set in the late 1800s, about Lieutenant Glahn who is trying to discover himself in Norway's Nordland while reflecting on his history. The story considers isolation, desire, and the hard parts of relationships as he studies the line between his quiet life in the wild and his connections with people such as Edwarda. Glahn looks back on a summer he spent enjoying the woods and his dog, Æsop, from the comfort of a hut surrounded by nature. He remembers meeting a girl and hints at past good and bad times while admiring the calm around him. Glahn also meets with people from the area, including Edwarda, a trader's daughter, their interactions imply growing feelings and suggest possible changes in his relationships as his love for being alone in nature and the difficulty of dealing with other people are shown.
