Summary

"The Green Mirror: A Quiet Story" by Hugh Walpole is a story set in the early 1900s that looks at the Trenchard family, especially Henry and Katherine, as they wrestle with what their family wants for them and what they want for themselves. It's about growing up, figuring out who you are, and how society’s rules can feel like a heavy weight. The story starts in a foggy old house where young Henry dreams of escaping his ordinary life and finding adventure, but he also loves his family and feels connected to them, especially his sister. As the family gathers for a birthday celebration, it shows the readers that big changes are coming that will change everything.

About the Author

Sir Hugh Seymour Walpole, CBE was an English novelist. He was the son of an Anglican clergyman, intended for a career in the church but drawn instead to writing. Among those who encouraged him were the authors Henry James and Arnold Bennett. His skill at scene-setting and vivid plots, as well as his high profile as a lecturer, brought him a large readership in the United Kingdom and North America. He was a best-selling author in the 1920s and 1930s but has been largely neglected since his death.
