Summary

"Portrait of a Man with Red Hair: A Romantic Macabre" by Hugh Walpole is a story about Charles Percy Harkness, an American who journeys to the scenic town of Treliss in Cornwall looking for peace after being alone for a while. As he gets to know the people there, he finds himself caught up in a series of romantic and possibly dangerous happenings. When Charles gets to Treliss by train, he is curious and wants adventure, even though he feels scared and lonely. At first, we learn that Charles is thoughtful and aware, stuck between being an American and his time in Europe. On his train ride, an old man who doesn't like tourists hints at the trouble that can come between visitors and the way things are done in Treliss. Soon after arriving, Charles gets involved in some puzzling drama when he overhears a girl named Hesther begging to get out of a bad marriage, and this kicks off a complicated look at love, who we are, and the problems that pop up in a place that seems perfect.

About the Author

Sir Hugh Seymour Walpole, CBE was an English novelist. He was the son of an Anglican clergyman, intended for a career in the church but drawn instead to writing. Among those who encouraged him were the authors Henry James and Arnold Bennett. His skill at scene-setting and vivid plots, as well as his high profile as a lecturer, brought him a large readership in the United Kingdom and North America. He was a best-selling author in the 1920s and 1930s but has been largely neglected since his death.
