Summary

"The Briary Bush: A Novel" by Floyd Dell is a story about a young man named Felix Fay trying to figure out who he is and what he wants in life, set against the backdrop of a growing Chicago. The book looks at how chasing your dreams can be hard when facing real-world problems, and how much a city can change a person. Felix starts off thinking about his desire to move to Chicago and leave behind his small-town life at the Port Royal Daily Record, and how he feels about love and past disappointments. He figures he needs to change who he is to make it in the bigger world. The author paints a picture of a young man ready to start a journey, trying to make his dreams fit with what's actually possible. The book's tone is thoughtful and introspective as it reflects on the internal conflict between ideals and ambition.
