Summary

"St. George and St. Michael, Volume 3" by George MacDonald is a story set during the English Civil War that shadows Richard Heywood’s journey through loyalty, integrity, and tribulations of war. Gravely injured, Richard finds refuge in Mistress Rees's cottage, where she aids in his healing. As Richard fights through delirium, memories of Dorothy, his love interest, surge to the surface. The story depicts Richard's transition from vulnerability to resolve as he sets out to find his father and engage in the battle at Gloucester. The evolving themes of love, selflessness, and the disorder of war underscore the challenges Richard will face amidst a divided England.
