Summary

The book centers on the relationship between the ambitious Sir Walter Raleigh and Eleanor White, set against the backdrop of Queen Elizabeth I’s court and early English attempts to colonize America. The story shows Raleigh's banishment by Queen Elizabeth, his colonization plans are fulfilled by forcing John White, Eleanor, and Ananias Dare to move to Roanoke Island. Eleanor is raised by the Croatoan tribe, evolves to become a leader known as White Doe, and her confrontation with a white man ends with the tragic silver arrow, which shows her defiance and destiny.

About the Author

Elbert Green Hubbard was an American writer, publisher, artist, and philosopher. Raised in Hudson, Illinois, he had early success as a traveling salesman for the Larkin Soap Company. Hubbard is known best as the founder of the Roycroft artisan community in East Aurora, New York, an influential exponent of the Arts and Crafts movement.
