Summary

"Memoirs of Louis XIV and His Court and of the Regency — Volume 06" by Louis de Rouvroy Saint-Simon is a historical record that gives readers a peek into the world of the French royal court in the 1700s. The book shines a light on the time when King Louis XIV ruled, focusing on the tricky politics, social happenings, and stories behind the scenes that affected how things were. The story starts with the Duke of Saint-Simon talking about a summer trip to Forges to get better but then changes to talk of sneaky political moves by royal family members wanting to get ahead while Louis XIV’s kids held positions of power. The book stresses a time at a royal church event that shows how important social ranking was, especially among dukes and princes. Furthermore, the memoir retells an instance showing the King’s unsettling reaction toward a supposed insult that occurred during a dinner at Marly, emphasizing the importance of keeping up appearances and personal vendettas within court life. These events introduce us to the difficulties of power, social position, and the ever-changing character of King Louis XIV’s court, masterfully captured by Saint-Simon.

About the Author

The family's ducal peerage (duché-pairie), granted in 1635 to his father Claude de Rouvroy (1608–1693), served as both perspective and theme in Saint-Simon's life and writings. He was the second and last Duke of Saint-Simon.
