Summary

"Memoirs of Louis XIV and His Court and of the Regency — Volume 13" by Louis de Rouvroy Saint-Simon tells of French court life in the 1700s. The story starts with a funny event about the Marquise de Charlus at a gambling party, which shows a critical view of court life combined with serious thoughts. Next, the story follows Duc d'Orleans as he deals with social challenges while personal and political goals mix during the changing Regency period. The story gets more intense when conflict arises with people like Pere Tellier and the Jesuits, showing how complicated power and influence are within the French court.

About the Author

Louis de Rouvroy, duc de Saint-Simon, GE, was a French soldier, diplomat, and memoirist. He was born in Paris at the Hôtel Selvois, 6 rue Taranne. The family's ducal peerage (duché-pairie), granted in 1635 to his father Claude de Rouvroy (1608–1693), served as both perspective and theme in Saint-Simon's life and writings. He was the second and last Duke of Saint-Simon.
