Summary

** "Memoirs of Louis XIV and His Court and of the Regency — Volume 08" by Louis de Rouvroy Saint-Simon is a window into the early 1700s, where the glittering court of France masks deep financial troubles and unrest during Louis XIV's reign. Through the eyes of the Duke of Saint-Simon, we see the drama unfold between the king, the nobles, and key players like Desmarets, as they navigate the treacherous waters of courtly life and political corruption amid rising taxes on the common people. The story plunges into the king's struggle to maintain power, Desmarets's attempts at financial reform, and the despair felt throughout the kingdom, all while personal tragedies within the royal family become entangled with the power games of the court. **
