Summary

"The Old Man of the Sea" by W. W. Jacobs is a funny short story about fooling others, set in the early 1900s. A man named George Wright gets an old sailor, Mr. Kemp, to pretend to be his wealthy uncle from New Zealand in order to impress a girl named Bella. As Mr. Kemp pretends to be rich, he tells big stories and acts flashy, but things get tricky when he enjoys acting rich too much and then wants to stay forever and win over Bella's mom, Mrs. Bradshaw. The story then has lots of funny problems between the characters, a surprise twist, and a frustrating moment, turning the original plan upside down because of the old man's wild actions and love for spending money without care.
