Summary

"The Toy" by Kris Neville is a science fiction story that drops us into a world where primitive people are struggling against oppressors known as "God-men" who use advanced technology to control them. We follow Neju, a native who leads his people in a desperate fight for freedom and the survival of his community. Neju's particular hatred for those God-men comes from their use of mechanical demons. The story builds to a confrontation where everything changes when a powerful device, described as childlike and created by mysterious Old Gods, suddenly appears and turns the tide, demolishing the God-men's power base in a surprising twist. The story shows a world of power struggles, where people yearn for freedom in the face of incredible odds, and how destiny can take unexpected turns.
