Summary

"The Elene of Cynewulf" translated into English prose by Lucius Hudson Holt is an Old English poem recounting the journey of Queen Elene, mother of Emperor Constantine, on her sacred mission to discover the True Cross. Prompted by her son's conversion to Christianity after a divine vision secures him victory in battle, Elene embarks for Jerusalem, where she faces resistance unearthing the sacred relics. With the reluctant aid of Judas, who eventually guides her, she uncovers three crosses, one of which performs a miracle by resurrecting the dead, revealing itself as the True Cross. This discovery not only confirms the power and truth of her faith, but also leads to Judas's own conversion and the establishment of a lasting church at Calvary to venerate the event.

About the Author

Cynewulf is one of twelve Old English poets known by name, and one of four whose work is known to survive today. He presumably flourished in the 9th century, with possible dates extending into the late 8th and early 10th centuries.
