Summary

"The King of the Golden River; or, the Black Brothers: A Legend of Stiria" by John Ruskin is a 19th-century fairy tale that whisks readers away to a magical Styria to teach valuable lessons about greed and kindness and how our choices impact those around us. Three brothers find themselves the owners of Treasure Valley, but while Schwartz and Hans are callous and only care for themselves, Gluck is caring, compassionate, and kind. After the ill-mannered brothers snub a magical visitor, their fortunes turn; they desperately seek gold at the Golden River, yet their selfishness causes them to fail, turning them into rocks. But young Gluck's kindness allows him to fulfill the dwarf king's moral test, which transforms the river to gold, returns the valley to life, and rewards him with happiness.
