Summary

"Oliver Twist, Vol. 1 (of 3)" by Charles Dickens is a tale set in the 1800s about a mistreated orphan named Oliver Twist, who must navigate the challenging world. The story shows how tough life was back then for poor, defenseless kids like Oliver because it explores ideas like unfairness in society and the terrible conditions of poverty. Readers witness Oliver’s miserable introduction into the world, beginning with difficulties at the workhouse where he was born to circumstances surrounding his mother's death. As Oliver ages, those in power worsen his treatment when he is continually confronted with harsh guardians in the workhouse who make him work very hard for very little food. Later reaching his breaking point, he pleads for more food, but instead faces more horrible consequences. He faces numerous encounters in which he is challenged to fight for survival as if the world is trying to diminish his dignity and spirit.
