Summary

"Echoes from the Sabine Farm" by Roswell Martin Field and Eugene Field is a collection of poems that creatively reimagines the works of the Roman poet Horace. The book, published in the late 19th century, reflects the authors' respect for Horace by presenting reworked odes with both humor and lyrical beauty. Poems touch on themes like nature, love, and enjoyment of life's simple pleasures, similar to Horace's original works, but are updated with fresh viewpoints. The collection humorously adapts Horace, examining friendship, love, and thoughts about life amid beautiful, country settings—often highlighting the charm of the Sabine landscape. The poems, full of appreciation for good company, youth's fleeting nature, and the delight of wine, ask readers to appreciate life's small joys, presented in a conversational style accessible to modern readers but echo classical poetry.

About the Author

Quintus Horatius Flaccus, commonly known in the English-speaking world as Horace, was the leading Roman lyric poet during the time of Augustus. The rhetorician Quintilian regarded his Odes as the only Latin lyrics worth reading: "He can be lofty sometimes, yet he is also full of charm and grace, versatile in his figures, and felicitously daring in his choice of words."
