Summary

"The Works of Horace" by Horace is a collection of poems from Ancient Rome, probably written in the 1st century BC, that looks at different feelings and ideas through odes. The poems talk about love, the beauty of the world, nature, and the hard parts of being alive. These poems are addressed to different people, like important supporters and people the speaker cares about, talking about things that matter to them and to society as a whole. Early on, the poet shows appreciation to Maecenas, a powerful supporter, while also showing how different people have different goals and ways of living. The odes think about many things, like religion and what it means to be human, as well as important issues like war, love, and how quickly time passes by. Each poem has its own style, showing how well Horace uses language and rhythm to mix personal feelings with deeper thoughts about life. Readers will find a wide range of emotions and ideas that make them think about what they want in their own lives and what is important in society.

About the Author

Quintus Horatius Flaccus, commonly known in the English-speaking world as Horace, was the leading Roman lyric poet during the time of Augustus. The rhetorician Quintilian regarded his Odes as the only Latin lyrics worth reading: "He can be lofty sometimes, yet he is also full of charm and grace, versatile in his figures, and felicitously daring in his choice of words."
