Summary

"Patrol" by William L. Hamling is a science fiction story from the 1950s that follows space patrolmen as they face the perils of monitoring an unexplored planet. The patrolmen, including the elder MacMartree and his younger companions, start out bored on the planet, but their assignment quickly turns dangerous when sickness and pain strike. As they struggle with these physical challenges, they discover that their advanced technology and abilities have limits leaving them vulnerable. The story then builds to a moment where they seek solace in prayer, acknowledging a higher power. Ultimately, the patrolmen experience healing, both in body and spirit, and learn to appreciate their humanity and the existence of God.
