Summary

"Lodore, Vol. 2 (of 3)" by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley is a continuation of a tale from the 1800s that centers on Ethel, her budding relationship with Edward Villiers, and the problematic influence of Lady Lodore, Ethel's mother. The book emphasizes themes of grief, different kinds of love, and what happens when people try to live up to what society expects, as Ethel tries to understand her feelings and her complicated family connections. After losing her father, Ethel finds comfort in Edward's cheerfulness and caring nature. Their bond gets stronger as they share moments, like a visit to Eton that reminds Ethel of her father. But, issues about Lady Lodore come up in talks with her aunt, Mrs. Elizabeth Fitzhenry, who sees Lady Lodore as a threat to Ethel's well-being, adding to the story's drama and conflict, setting the scene for a study of who these characters are and how their families affect them.
