Summary

"Lodore, Vol. 1 (of 3)" by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley is a story set in the 1800s that follows the Fitzhenry family as they navigate life in England and America. The book focuses on issues of love, sadness, and finding yourself, showing us characters like the honorable Lord Lodore, who is having a hard time, his caring sister Elizabeth, and his hopeful daughter Ethel. At the beginning of the book, we are introduced to Elizabeth Fitzhenry in the peaceful village of Longfield, Essex, is sad because of family problems and because her brother, Lord Lodore, is gone. The story then changes to Lodore, who is trying to escape aristocratic life in the American wilderness but can't escape his feelings of regret. The book is full of emotion, showing how families affect us and how hard it is to find love when society has certain expectations.

About the Author

Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley was an English novelist who wrote the Gothic novel Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus (1818), which is considered an early example of science fiction. She also edited and promoted the works of her husband, the Romantic poet and philosopher Percy Bysshe Shelley. Her father was the political philosopher William Godwin and her mother was the philosopher and women's rights advocate Mary Wollstonecraft.
