Summary

"A Changed Man, and Other Tales" by Thomas Hardy is a collection of short stories set in the 1800's. The book starts with “A Changed Man," a tale about love, what people expect from each other, and how people change. It's about Captain John Maumbry going from a brave soldier to a church leader. He struggles with what he wants and what he should do, all while dealing with what society thinks. The story begins in Casterbridge, bustling with townsfolk and the arrival of the Hussars, where Captain Maumbry's allure captures the attention of Laura, intrigued by military life. Rumors of a ghost among the Hussars add a playful element, while the relationships among Maumbry, Laura, and the town emphasize the tensions of romance and social standing and his personal battle with his evolving purpose.

About the Author

Thomas Hardy was an English novelist and poet. A Victorian realist in the tradition of George Eliot, he was influenced both in his novels and in his poetry by Romanticism, including the poetry of William Wordsworth. He was highly critical of much in Victorian society, especially on the declining status of rural people in Britain such as those from his native South West England.
