"The Fortunes of Perkin Warbeck: A Romance" by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley is a story about the dramatic life of Perkin Warbeck, a man who said he was the missing Duke of York, during the Wars of the Roses. The story looks at major ideas like who we are, what makes someone a rightful ruler, and how power works during a time of conflict. It begins with characters caught up in the fighting for the English throne after the Battle of Bosworth Field. Three horsemen are shown escaping the battle, desperate to find safety and talking about their connections to important families and possible friends. One of them wants to leave because he is discouraged and thinks they should slow down, showing how important loyalty is and how dangerous political friendships can be. They end up at a chapel, looking for help, which hints at how Warbeck's life and the royal family will become connected as he declares to be apart of their lineage. Shelley uses these opening events to create a historical story full of mystery and the fight for control.
