Summary

** "The Story of Francis Cludde" by Stanley John Weyman is a historical romance about a young man in 16th-century England trying to find his own way. The story is set during the time of Queen Mary, and follows Francis Cludde as he deals with complicated family relationships, what society expects of him, and his own goals. A big part of the story is the fight between Francis and Chancellor Stephen Gardiner, which leads to political secrets and Francis growing up as a person. At his family's home on the Ridgeway, Francis shows that he doesn't like being told what to do, especially by his uncle in front of important visitors, which shows his wish to be his own person. Soon after, and some embarrassing moments, Francis decides to leave. He is determined to make a life for himself and not one that is decided for him by his family or society, causing him to leave. **
