Summary

"The Long Night" by Stanley John Weyman is a gripping historical novel set in 17th-century Geneva. It follows Claude Mercier, a naive theology student whose dreams of knowledge and liberty are challenged when he arrives in a city rife with political unrest and religious fervor. As Mercier narrowly enters the city, he’s immediately thrown into a world of tavern brawls and the ever-present threat of imprisonment, revealing the precarious balance of power and the simmering conflicts that define Geneva. His path leads him through the city's tumultuous social landscape, where he learns that personal honor and survival come at a much higher price than he ever imagined.
