Summary

"Rose of Dutcher's Coolly" by Hamlin Garland is a story about a special girl named Rose, living in the countryside long ago, who faces some big changes as she gets older. The tale looks at how she grows from a smart and curious kid playing games into a young lady thinking about what she wants to do with her life. With her mom gone, Rose is very close to her dad, but he doesn't always know how to deal with her questions and ideas. As Rose wonders about life and death while exploring the world around her, she decides she wants to go to school in a big city called Madison. The novel takes her from a time of innocence into a time of understanding what's expected of her.
