Summary

"When the Mountain Shook" by Robert Abernathy is a science fiction story that mixes a thrilling adventure, sweet romance, and very old legends with the scary possibilities of the future. It mainly tells of a couple, Var and Neena, who are trying to find their way through dangerous times, hoping to succeed while dealing with long-standing family problems and awakening a danger that has been quiet for a long while. Var and Neena run away from their families, who are caught up in an intense and bitter argument. Neena's father, Groz, is after them as they look for a safe place in the mountains. There, they meet the Watcher, an old protector who has been around for centuries. The Watcher tells them stories of the Ryzgas, an ancient and cruel group thought to be fast asleep inside the mountain. Trying to dodge those chasing them, the pair chooses to wake up the strong Ryzgas, planning to use their power to fight their enemies. The story reaches its peak with a big fight inside the mountain. Var goes up against a Ryzga and stops his plans, leading to a crucial instant that might forever change the power balance of their big family fight.
