Summary

"The Eel" by Miriam Allen De Ford is a science fiction tale set in the late 1950s that explores the challenges of galactic law when a master thief, called The Eel, is finally caught after two decades of interstellar heists. Representatives from eight planets of the Galactic Federation gather to decide which planet can prosecute him, highlighting the differences among their cultures and justice systems. The story intensifies when the trial lands on Agsk, a world where the law requires punishing the criminal’s most beloved person. The Eel's lack of genuine affection for anyone creates a legal paradox. Matters become more complicated when The Eel attempts to manipulate the judge by feigning love for her. The story explores themes of individuality, justice, and self-love, leaving the reader questioning what will happen to The Eel because the Galactic Federation has to determine his fate.
