Summary

"The Magnificent Lovers (Les Amants magnifiques)" by Molière is a comedic play from the 1600s that makes fun of love, competition, and how fake rich court life could be. Princess Eriphyle has three men after her heart: two princes named Iphicrates and Timocles, who try to impress her, and a general named Sostratus, who thinks he’s not good enough for her but loves her anyway. With the help of an astrologer named Anaxarchus, Eriphyle tries to figure out who she wants, but in the end, the goddess Venus steps in to help Eriphyle choose Sostratus as her husband, showing that love can be surprising and doesn't always care about money or power.

About the Author

Jean-Baptiste Poquelin, known by his stage name Molière, was a French playwright, actor, and poet, widely regarded as one of the great writers in the French language and world literature. His extant works include comedies, farces, tragicomedies, comédie-ballets, and more. His plays have been translated into every major living language and are performed at the Comédie-Française more often than those of any other playwright today. His influence is such that the French language is often referred to as the "language of Molière".
