"The Underpup" by I. A. R. Wylie is a story set in the early 1900's about kids at summer camp. The story explores feelings of being different, social awareness, and growing as a person, shown through a young girl named Pip-Emma Binns who is from a poorer home than the other kids in her group, called the "Penguins." As Pip-Emma spends time at Camp Happy Warriors, she has a hard time fitting in and feels unsure of herself, but she makes friends with girls named Clara VanSittart and Janet Cooper. As the story moves on, Pip-Emma learns more about herself as she deals with camp life, her own problems, and her friendships. The high point of the story is when Pip-Emma realizes how important friendship and kindness are, which helps her gain the respect and friendship of the other girls.
