Summary

"The Natural History of Pliny, Volume 5" by the Elder Pliny is an ancient scientific document filled with facts about nature. It's like a guidebook for understanding the natural world, focusing on plants, trees, and how they can be used as medicine, like an olden-days doctor's manual, and includes the strange relationships scientists observed about how plants seemed to react to each other. The volume introduces many treatments that may be found when exploring a forest, describing natural cures from specific trees and plants. The document is a historical look at ancient Roman medicine that emphasizes the healing powers found in nature.

About the Author

Gaius Plinius Secundus, known in English as Pliny the Elder, was a Roman author, naturalist, natural philosopher, and naval and army commander of the early Roman Empire, and a friend of the emperor Vespasian. He wrote the encyclopedic Naturalis Historia, a comprehensive thirty-seven-volume work covering a vast array of topics on human knowledge and the natural world, which became an editorial model for encyclopedias. He spent most of his spare time studying, writing, and investigating natural and geographic phenomena in the field.
